High Dose IV Vitamin C

and Cancer

Vitamin C has many functions in the body here is a short list:

  • Collagen Synthesis

    • Connective tissue is the most abundant tissue in your body. Collagen is the main component of connective tissues.

  • Norepinephrine synthesis

    • Norepinephrine serves many purposes in the body, it is part of our fight or flight response and it is a neurotransmitter helping us to modulate our stress.

  • Increases Iron Absorption

    • If someone has iron deficiency Iron can be difficult to absorb, vitamin C significantly supports Iron absorption

  • Stress Hormone Synthesis

    • When we are under chronic high stress we use up our vitamin C very quickly thus increasing the need.

  • Antioxidant

    • This is one that everyone is familiar with, within the cells of our body there is a natural oxidative process that occurs that we need to balance with anti-oxidants. If this goes unbalanced then degeneration and aging occurs.

  • Increases immune function and macrophage activity

    • Traditionally this is the reason that High Dose IV Vitamin C has been used for cancer treatments for more than 40 years now

  • Their are other functions, but we will stop there and turn our focus to it's use for cancer.

Does High Dose IV Vitamin C (HDIVC) interfere with Chemotherapy?
  • According to a Literature Review by clinician and researcher Dr. Paul Anderson out of 92 papers on the subject 5 papers show a contraindication with 5 specific chemo therapies; 2 of the papers show a neutral impact with doing co treatment with chemo and HDIVC; and 85 papers show that most chemo therapies have more favorable outcomes with co treatment of chemo and HDIVC.
Which Chemo therapies are contraindicated and why?
  1. Methotrexate (Trexall): because it works against methotrexate
  2. Conatumumab - TRIAL Ligan: because it works against
  3. Interleukin-2 (Aldesleukin): Significantly increases clearance making the drug ineffective.
  4. Exemestane (Aromasin): Significantly increases clearance making the drug ineffective.
  5. *Arsenox (Arsenic trioxide): 1 paper showed that Vitamin C protected specific cells (HL60 and U266)from arsenic poisoning. 5 papers showed a synergistic effect with Arsenox and HDIVC.
Which Chemo therapy drugs work better with HDIVC?
  • Dacarbazine (DTIC), Temozolomide (Temodar), Lomustine (CCNU), Melphalan (Alkeran), Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan), Ifosphamide (Mitoxana and Ifex), Procarbazine (Matulane), Cisplatin (Platinol), Carboplatin (Paraplatin and Paraplatin-AQ), Fluorouracil (5-FU), Gemcitabine (Gemzar), Irinotecan (Camptosar), Etoposide (VP-16,VePe-sid), Vinblastine (Velban), Vincristine (Oncovin), Paclitaxel (Taxol), Docetaxel (Taxotere), Arsenic trioxide (Arsenox)*, Doxorubicin (Adriamycin, Rubex, Doxil),  Daunorubicin (DaunoXome)and Epirubicin (Ellence), Mitomycin (Mutamycin), Bleomycin (Blenoxane), Tamoxifen (Nolvadex),  FOLFIRI, FOLFOX, Hydroxyurea (Hydrea), Imatinib (Gleevec),  Bevacizumab (Avastin), Erlotinib (Tarceva), mTOR inhibitors,  Interferon-alpha, Thalidomide / lenalidomide (Revlimid).

What if I don't see the chemo drug that I am on in the above list?
  • There are several drugs that have not had this research done on them yet, ask our doctors about your specific chemo and we can check the latest literature to see if there is any new information.

What if I want to look at the research myself?
  • We strongly encourage that as the more knowledge you can gain in the process the better equipped you are to make the right decisions for your health.
  • Here is a PDF of Dr. Paul Anderson's Literature review with all references.
What is needed in order to receive HDIVC treatments and Bluestone Natural Medicine's  DRIPZ center?
  1. Comprehensive Visit with one of our Doctors
  2. Specific Lab work (G6PD, Vitamin D, CBC, and CMP; depending on the type of cancer: current cancer markers and hormones)
How does the treatment work with doing chemo?
  • Ideally we will begin HDIVC 1 - 2 weeks prior to the start of your chemo, administering 2 HDIVC's a week throughout your chemo treatments.
  • We like to check cancer markers and or imaging every 10 - 12 weeks to make sure we are moving in the right direction.
Will I receive other treatments besides HDIVC and Chemo?
  • Each cancer case is different, and there are many tools that can be utilized to treat cancer and increase quality of life. Your Oncologist may talk to you about surgery and radiation. We will definitely review with you many of the tools we have to offer at Bluestone Natural Medicine that are appropriate for your type of cancer.
Does HDIVC work with radiation treatments also?
  • Actually according to the literature review listed above there has been 11 studies done on using HDIVC and radiation treatments together and every study has shown an increase in positive treatment response.
